Marine Pollution

Marine pollution is one of the major threats faced by our oceans and plastic debris is one of the main pollution sources.

It is estimated that eight million tons of plastic are dumped annually in the ocean including bottles, packaging, bags and other waste, causing the death of marine species and birds.

Recent studies have shown that islands of plastics are forming in the ocean due to floating plastics particles that accumulate in oceanic vortexes around the globe. The management of this problem should be a global priority.

The goal of Our Ocean Conference – Chile 2015 is to promote initiatives that define concrete action to help reduce the levels of pollution, especially plastic, in the ocean. For this, during theconference, the magnitude of this type of pollution and its impact in costal communities will be assessed.
